Church in Kalnica

Filial Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Kalnica

Kalnica is a small, picturesque village located near Wetlina, in the very heart of the Bieszczady Mountains. This peaceful settlement, surrounded by the beautiful Bieszczady landscape, is a place where faith and nature create an extraordinary harmony.

Construction History

The filial Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Kalnica was built between 1999 and 2003 through the efforts of the Bernardine Fathers from the monastery in Wetlina and the residents of Kalnica and surrounding areas. The construction of the church was a response to the spiritual needs of the faithful, who previously had to travel a considerable distance to the parish church in Wetlina.

Architecture

The church was designed by architect Kazimierz Luczko from Przeworsk on the plan of the letter TAU (T) — a Franciscan symbol. The TAU letter, which St. Francis of Assisi made his distinctive sign, symbolizes the Cross of Christ and conversion. This shape of the building expresses the Franciscan spirituality that permeates the life of the parish community.

The church fits harmoniously into the surrounding Bieszczady landscape. Its simple yet expressive architecture references monastic tradition while maintaining a contemporary character.

Holy Masses

Holy Mass at the church in Kalnica is celebrated on Sundays and holy days at 11:30 AM.

Patronage

The patron of the church is St. Francis of Assisi (1181/1182–1226) — founder of the Order of Friars Minor, patron of ecology and animals, one of the most well-known and beloved saints of the Catholic Church. The choice of patron emphasizes the church's connection with the Order of Friars Minor (Bernardines), who care for the parish in Wetlina.
